At a time of heightened market stress, our third annual Alpha Awards show what hedge fund managers really think of their providers. H edge funds have faced a series of challenges the past 12 months, and their service providers have been right alongside them for much of the ride. From the increased scrutiny by politicians in Europe and the U.S. early this year to the subprime mortgage crisis that unexpectedly roiled securities prices and dried up liquidity in equity and credit markets around the world, drawing the ire of a U.S. Congress that was already wary of wealthy managers, the issues facing hedge funds have had an impact on the firms that cater to them. Law and accounting firms have found themselves grappling with potential tax changes; administrators have been faced with increasingly complex valuations; and prime brokers have experienced the biggest test of their business since 1998. Although the ongoing growth of the hedge fund industry, which is likely to surpass $2 trillion in assets early next year, has been an enormous source of revenue for administrators, accountants, law firms and prime brokers, the rapid expansion is putting a strain on their resources. As a result, relations between hedge funds and their service providers are sometimes less than harmonious. In July, Archeus Capital Management filed a lawsuit in New York against London’s GlobeOp Financial Services, alleging that GlobeOp’s failure as its administrator to properly maintain fund records contributed to events that caused New York–based Archeus to go out of business late last year. GlobeOp, which was in the process of filing for an initial public offering at the time, and Archeus settled OCTOBER 2007 • INSTITUTIONAL INVESTOR’S ALPHA • 43
