by Andrew Rauh y interest in developing mobile apps was actually fueled by an experiment with trash. Intrigued by green energy and chemistry, I decided to produce cellulosic ethanol from waste paper, food, leaves, grass, and sawdust for my 10th-grade science fair project. Even though it was a lot of work, this project taught me how to research and attack a problem, adapt to changes, and deliver a finished project. My ethanol experiment took me from a school and regional science fair to the state contest and eventually to the 2009 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). An exciting competition of 1,600 high school scientists from around the globe, ISEF was a life-altering experience for me. As I walked through the exhibition hall, I met hundreds of talented teens and learned about groundbreaking research, such as the use of bioluminescence in cancer cells and the new carbon nanoparticle, graphene. Although my interest in green energy brought me to ISEF, it was my interest in tech computer and mobile technology that really exploded there. I recognized that computer science was at the core of most projects, regardless of the field of study. For example, one display investigated a head-controlled com computer interface for the disabled, while another used computers to model and analyze data for a lens to bend light. At one point, while looking at a project about using artificial intelligence to diagnose skin cancer from photos, I started thinking about how a cell phone app might make this process easier. By combining the power of algorithms with mobile computing, an app could possibly provide a way to get a faster diagnosis. As far as I knew, there were no existing apps to do this. Why couldn’t I create the app to solve this problem? Why not get out there and start exploring? I couldn’t wait to begin. M Byte by Byte I started by using social networking websites like Twitter and Facebook to build connections with other young people who had developed successful apps or websites of their own. I soon realized there is an Internet culture of technology-driven teens who put on conferences, develop websites or apps, and have profitable startup companies. One group, Teens in Tech, hosts a conference in San Francisco (which has even been attended by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak). I began to follow other young entrepreneurs on the Internet, including Christian Owens, founder of Branchr and MacBundleBox; Hunter Owens, co-founder of Accelsor and MyTechQuestion.com; and Steven Huber, who helped develop Wooden Labyrinth 3D, an app with over 7 million downloads. Excited to get started, I watched Stanford and MIT lectures on iTunes U and attended presentations on entrepreneurship, programming, and mobile apps at Wayne State and the University of Michigan. I created my own blog and website to share ideas and get feedback. I also began to experiment with 8 imagine May/Jun 2011 http://www.MyTechQuestion.com
