Since its launch in 1999, the Chandra X-ray Telescope has helped astronomers understand how galaxies formed from the Big Bang, estimate the age of the universe, and determine whether the universe will expand forever—or collapse. (The science points to perpetual expansion.) With power equivalent to a human’s ability to read a stop sign from 12 miles away, Chandra has produced valuable studies of supernovae remnants and black holes. In fact, Chandra can detect electromagnetic energy from particles up to the second before they fall into a black hole.
