There’s plenty to do without drinking, too. All on-campus movie screenings, concerts, and speakers are free and open to the community. There are three movies every weekend, and usually a couple more during the week, as well as numerous speakers and a concert or two.” ➜ “The social life is fantastic; it’s what really makes the school. It’s very inclusive. Sports are no-cut at the varsity level, so everyone can participate. There are clubs for everyone, from the GLBTQAA groups to paintball. Every other week or so, we have campus-wide themed dance parties. Most students dress up for the theme, and everyone gets really into it. My favorite has always been the ‘80s party, but we also have Mary B. James (crossdressing), disco, Halloween, and Waltz, an end-ofsemester formal. Rolling Stone even did a story on how bizarre and creative our parties are.” ➜ “Definitely a work hard/play hard school— everyone stays out until 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights, and you can find them all groggily doing their work at 9 a.m. at the Campus Center the next morning.” What Do You Like Least About Grinnell? ➜ “The workload is very intense. While this is good preparation for law or graduate school, it can be extremely stressful. And socially, it creates a situation I can only call tantalizing. Sometimes you feel as if you’re surrounded by the coolest people you’ll ever meet, but you have little time to enjoy them.” ➜ “I didn’t like how much of the nightlife revolved around alcohol.” ➜ “The isolation. It’s a long drive to the airport!” ➜ “Students at Grinnell are almost exclusively liberal. This is certainly not unique among small liberal arts colleges, but it’s important to remember that you might have to go out of your way to get other points of view on some issues.” Who Would Be Most Compatible with the Academic and Social Atmosphere at Grinnell? ➜ “Someone who loves to learn and is politically/ socially active (or at least enjoys people who are), creative, determined, and doesn’t mind a few wild parties each semester—or cold winter mornings.” ➜ “Someone who is curious, open-minded, and pleasantly eccentric.” What Do You Like Best About Grinnell?
