Urban areas are glowing nebulae; highways and railways thread out in shining filaments. As beautiful as it is, this image also provides a dramatic representation of energy consumption. As the lights show, the most populous parts of the world are not necessarily the biggest energy consumers. The United States, for example, is home to just five percent of the world’s population yet consumes 25 percent of the world’s energy. More than 80 percent of the world’s electricity is generated by burning fossil fuels. The resulting release of carbon dioxide is the single biggest contributor to global warming.
