such	as	restaurants,	may	need	shirts,	hats	and	
aprons.	These	may	be	ordered	by	the	consumer	on	
an	individual	basis	as	a	bundle.	Specify	how	you	
will	stock,	pick	and	pack	everything.	There	also	
could	be	promotional	or	welcoming	messages,	or	
other	items	that	must	be	packaged	with	the	outgoing	order.	Get	clear	expectations	on	what	you	
need	to	do	before	giving	price	quotes.

Pricing
Customers	usually	want	pricing	based	on	the	program's	
expected	total.	However,	the	quantity	may	not	be	guaranteed,	so	set	a	minimum	range.	Consider	how	you	will	
produce	each	set	of	reorders	or	the	cumulative	number	
of	shirts	ordered	for	the	entire	program.	
The	customer	also	may	approve	advance	production	of	
a	large	number	of	units	to	keep	in	stock	and	use	as	part	
of	a	fulfillment	program.	This	keeps	the	production	cost	
lower,	but	adds	inventory-related	tasks	to	your	workload.
Production	is	the	easy	part	for	shops	new	to	this	type	
of	work.	Monitoring	inventory	levels,	pulling	and	packing	orders,	and	managing	the	entire	program	usually	are	
the	challenges.

Contracts and Agreements
Uniform	programs	can	be	lucrative,	but	they	involve	a	lot	
of	work	and	financial	considerations.	Protect	your	company	
by	drafting	an	agreement	that	outlines	clear	expectations	
between	your	shop	and	customer,	especially	if	you're	purchasing	large	amounts	of	inventory	to	stock.	
Consider	the	following:
*	 Can	blank	stock	be	returned	to	the	distributor?	
Will	your	customer	pay	for	anything	that	can't	
be	returned?	
*	 What	about	logo	changes	or	new	artwork?	If	
you	have	a	skid	or	two	of	predecorated	goods,	it	
could	be	an	issue.
*	 What	about	color	changes?	How	are	you	going	
to	use	the	stock	on	hand?
*	 Whose	packaging	is	being	used	for	shipping?	Is	
your	customer	supplying	it	or	will	you?	Include	
this	in	your	pricing	calculations.
*	 Will	floor	inventory	be	counted	monthly	or	
quarterly?	Ensure	you	understand	the	customer's	expectations.	
*	 What	if	the	apparel	blanks	are	discontinued	or	
have	a	price	increase?
*	 What	if	dye	lots	don't	match	exactly?	Include	
language	in	your	agreement	that	says	you	don't	
control	this	type	of	challenge.
*	 How	will	you	handle	returns?	Sizing	often	is	an	
issue,	so	spell	out	your	policy.

Production Tips
While	uniform-program	orders	are	fairly	easy	to	produce,	they	can	
clog	your	production	schedule	with	smaller	runs.	Figure	out	how	to	
handle	orders	in	advance	so	you	can	understand	the	impact	it	may	
have	on	the	rest	of	your	workload.
Consider	the	following:

*	 For	screen	printing	logos,	it	may	be	easier	to	produce	sheets	
of	heat	transfers	and	apply	them	on-demand	with	the	orders.	Simply	gang	20	or	30	images	on	a	carrier	sheet,	then	
print	and	cut	them	into	ready-to-use	logos.	Keep	them	in	
an	envelope	or	flat	file.	As	orders	come	in,	you	can	use	them.	
This	takes	the	impact	off	your	screen-printing	schedule	and	
reroutes	it	into	an	easier-to-manage	production	area.
