industry professionals give tips on essentials
that will help ensure business success.

Imagine cutting grass with a push mower,
managing monthly expenses without a
calculator or communicating with clients
via typewriter.Tools evolve for many reasons: to save time, effort and energy; and
increase production, sales and revenue.
The embroidery industry is no exception, with faster and more streamlined
machines, supplies catering to embroiderers' needs and new developments

helping to modernize this old form of
embellishment.
Here, several industry experts and insiders share the tools they consider necessary
for an embroidery shop's success.
Machines and Software
Let's start with choosing an embroidery machine, which requires research,

investigation and planning before purchase.
"The wrong machine is going to wreck
your business," says Rich Medcraft, owner, StitchWise Embroidery Design, Eagle
Point, Oregon. "Take the time to sit
through machine demonstrations, talk
to users; this is the single most important
decision you can make. And it is such a
personal decision since all of us are not
'wired' the same way.
"Your machine needs to be intuitive; you
must have after-purchase service readily
available, including technicians trained
on your machine who can make service
calls at your shop," he adds."Parts should
be easy to come by. And by all means,
avoid,'It's just like [another brand], only
cheaper.' I've seen companies go under,
having made the wrong choice, and it's
sad to watch."
David Sowell, owner of Fluid Threads,
Houston, agrees. "Take the time to do
the math," he says. "Look at the speed
each machine is capable of and estimate
your production time. If you are making
the decision of single vs. multihead machines, think of your machines as your
business partner; it must carry its weight
and then some."
Medcraft also considers software - an
embroidery business owner's second largest investment - key to a shop's success.
"I know this to be true because when I
started my business 16 years ago, I spent
$10,000 on software that I eventually
outgrew," he says. "Had I known then,
I would have shopped around a little bit
more and bought software that could
have grown with me. Even if you are not
