to fine-tune the production process, as
variances in heat presses, humidity and
transfer paper - to name a few - can
affect ink transfer.
If you feel compelled to vary the settings,
do so in a scientific manner; adjust one
variable at a time and note any differences. Continue these adjustments until you
are satisfied with the result, then write it
down.The best settings can vary between
substrate brands, especially when it comes
to apparel.
No Outdoor Products
Sublimation is not UV-resistant, so it will
fade in direct sunlight over time.Thus, the
process generally is not used for signage
that is subject to long periods of intense
sunlight exposure. However, you still can
create outdoor products within reason;
just be sure to set customer expectations
accordingly.

Everything fades in sunlight.Thus, customers know what to expect with items
that are used outdoors, such as license plates,
smaller signage and golf-course flags.Treat
it as "recurring income," as natural fading
will require the product to be replaced
periodically. But be smart about your
decisions and honest with the customer.
So far, there is no consensus on a solution to the sunlight problem. Some decorators experiment with UV coatings for
sublimated products. Such experimentation is fine, as long as it doesn't involve a
customer's order. Some UV protectants
appear to slightly retard fading, whereas
others actually affect image quality when
applied.
Some manufacturers now are producing
sublimation substrates that have a higher
degree of fade resistance. Consult your
sublimation dealer to learn more.

Stick to Flat Surfaces
Because pressure is mandatory in sublimation production and most heat presses are
flat, decorators generally are limited to flat
items by virtue of the equipment options.
Of course, the mug press is an exception,
as it's designed for narrow cylindrical items
such as mugs and water bottles. It can't be
used for many products beyond mugs, but
there may be a few exceptions.
Take a closer look at mug wraps, which
are stretched around a cylindrical object
to hold the transfer in place while the
substrate is placed in a convection oven
rather than a heat press. Because wraps
come in different styles and sizes, they
sometimes can be used for other rounded
products, such as pet bowls.
In addition, vacuum presses allow sublimation for various odd-shaped products,
including the sides of cellphone covers.
The key is to be familiar with the different production tools available and find
out whether they can be modified for
other uses.
Use Sublimation-Approved Products

Skirting the Light garmentS

The point here is that you need a
high-quality polymer or polyester surface to support high-quality sublimation.
Typically, products that are manufactured
for this process - and there are hundreds
- are machined to very specific tolerances to ensure an even, consistent and
permanent surface.
Some DIY products make it possible for
you to add your own coatings.Test these
products and processes before promoting
the capabilities to a customer. Considering
that most of the coating products are in
aerosol form, the application process is
the same as spray painting.Thus, getting
even coverage can be challenging.
The reality is that there are products
available, but the results may not be desirable, especially if you are dealing with
finely detailed images. It's certainly worth
exploring the possibilities, but proceed
with extreme caution.
Experimentation can be the genesis
of genius, so don't be afraid to push the
envelope. 

If you want to apply sublimation to a white polyester shirt and give it a dark look, you can use the
allover-printing process. With this type of printing, large-scale designs that completely cover the

Instead of starting with a black shirt, for example, create it by sublimating a white shirt, with the
background color as part of the design being printed - in this case, black. Essentially, you are
recoloring the entire shirt while adding the design. Obviously, this process requires large-scale
equipment, but you always can contract it out if your shop doesn't have the capabilities.
