Selling printed apparel for fundraisers goes high-tech. By Rick Davis Gildan New Balance Shows M y lucky number is 21. Okay, maybe it's not "lucky," as it never helps me hit the lottery. I guess it's more of a By MICHELLE M. HAVICH favorite - ever since I was 14 years old and Paul MacDermid wore the No. 21 sweater for the Binghamton Whalers AHL hockey team. He was, in a word, dreamy. I am sure there are better reasons to like a certain player, but like I said, I was 14 and he was dreamy. Today, I sport a No. 43 jersey for Troy Polomalu of the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers, and his looks have nothing to do with it (although his hair is fabulous). Everywhere you look, people are wearing their favorite player's number on their backs, either on an authentic jersey, sweater, sweat shirt - there are as many options as there are numbers. And it's a decorator's job to make those numbers stick, while also making a team (and its fans) stand out. How do you offer a more diversified selection and get a bigger piece of that business? In this issue, contributing writer Paul Sabatini looks at all varieties of number styles in "Playing the Numbers Game" on page 12, while in our cover story, "Working with Athletic Inks" (page 6), Rick Davis helps decorators fi nd the right ink to use on new performancewear fabrics. And if you're looking to raise some dollars with fundraising T-shirts, Jay Busselle updates us on the best ways to get those numbers up, starting on page 16. So, what's your lucky number? No, really ... I need to pick some lottery winners.
