Enterprise Search Sourcebook 2008 - (Page SMS_28) COMMENTARY ENTERPRISE SEARCH Seen From the Inside RESULTS FROM THE 2007 GLOBAL INTRANET STRATEGIES SURVEY BY JANE MCCONNELL t he 2007 Global Intranet Strategies Survey turned up some startling—even worrisome—statistics about enterprise search. It also offered a wealth of firsthand commentary from those in the know: the intranet managers themselves, from 178 organizations around the world, who participated in the 2007 survey. The organizations they work for are headquartered in Europe, North America, and Asia Pacific; range in size from 1,000 to more than 100,000 employees; and represent a wide range of sectors. With figures like this, it is not surprising that there is a high level of dissatisfaction with enterprise search. The survey population can be analyzed by comparing three segments: Class 1, where the intranet is an essential part of how the organization works today; Class 2, where the intranet will play a significant role in 2 or 3 years; and Class 3, where it will be 3 to 4 or more years before this happens. Class 1 enterprises have more resources dedicated to search and also have a higher overall satisfaction rate with search.
