The Queen of Hearts has shown up many times in our art over the years, whether she be a companion for Alice in Wonderland, or as the reigning matriarch of Love. In this piece she is surrounded by her little court jesters (another favorite theme), reminding us that no one is immune to Love’s promise to make fools of all.” Opposite: “Winter Moon” • 15" ¥ 12½" • Acrylic paint on quilted muslin, antique white buttons, embroidery floss, glass beads. “For this piece I dipped into my collection of beloved white buttons. I used antique buttons made of mother-of-pearl, shell, milk glass, and bone. I was dreaming of clear winter nights: a chill in the air, visible breath, and the miracle of snowflakes. Each of the moon’s breathy swirls is hand-stitched using a simple running stitch. The snowflakes are accented with little glass beads in silvery blue and white. Moons are recurring characters in my art. They seem friendly and so closely linked to childhood stories and rhymes.” • Paper, as large as you want your finished quilt painting to be (I use freezer paper for this.) • Pencil • Good muslin, enough for the front and back • Cotton batting, as big as your finished quilt painting • Thread, cotton or cotton-covered polyester • Sewing machine • Acrylic craft paint, a variety of colors and burnt umber (I like Folk Art® brand by Plaid®.) • Assorted paintbrushes, including a fine detail brush • Sandpaper, fine-grit • Paper towels • Cloth rags • Water • Embroidery floss and needle • Miscellaneous embellishments, such as buttons, beads, bits, and bobs optional materials 1. 2. • Archival inks • Colored pencils C P S
