Cloth Paper Scissors - March/April 2009 - (Page 15) from pepperoni TO “This pizza box was done to publicize a 10-week session of mixed-media classes for 3rd–5th graders at Chesterfield Arts, my local arts organization,” says Mary Beth Shaw. “What could be more universally kid-friendly than pizza? The back of a pizza box is a perfect substrate for painting since it’s flat but has just the right amount of texture. I first painted it with gesso and collaged blueprints with gel medium. I then used a variety of acrylic paints (both full-bodied and fluid) to add color washes and to paint the pears. I accented the pears with soft pastel and pencil, then stamped the black grid using a carved eraser, and lastly stenciled white squares. The lettering is from old rub-on material discarded by graphic designers (and salvaged by me). Pizza boxes also make great storage units in your studio!” Mary Beth Shaw MBSHAW.COM AW.COM cardboard tubes (wrapped with yarn, string, chains, rubber bands): roll in paint and roll on paper or fabric aluminum cans: many have texture right on the can, or can be wrapped like the cardboard tubes above create a stamp from a potato, or other vegetable/fruit, or a bar of soap: carve into them or use as a shape stamp pine boughs: use either under fabric/ everything but the kitchen sink alternate texture/ printing tools It would be very nice if we always had just the right tool to make our mark, but improvising encourages creativity! Some household objects and cast-offs make wonderful textured prints. Take a look around your home and you’ll be surprised how many “tools” you already have on hand. shower puffs: create texture with a paper towel tubes: apply paint(s) and paper for rubbing or paint and “slap” onto fabric or paper cookie cutters: great for stamping old toothbrushes or hand brushes: roll them onto your fabric or paper and/or print with the end of the tube (adding or removing paint) empty tape “rings”: see above baby/doll shoes: great little stamps orphan earrings or pendants: splatter paint or brush through paints/ gels/gesso Q-tips: tape several together in a line or in a group and paint with them checkers, dominoes, other game pieces: use as stamps or under substrate stamping or rubbing potato masher: stamping, removing for rubbings old make-up brushes: painting or paint, or rubbing combs/hair picks: draw them through texturizing buttons, keys, safety pins, paper clips: stamps or rubbings (arranged or heavy application of paint or gesso, or airy prints when applied lightly the paint or gesso to create lines and texture randomly) mesh baby gates, place mats, or trivets: see above C P S http://www.mbshaw.com
