The Quilting Arts “Go Green!” reader challenge (results appear in the August/ September 2008 issue of Quilting Arts MAgAzine®) sent me to my stash recently and I instantly began thinking of things that I could use for making puffy hearts: recycled Tyvek® envelopes, part of an old curtain, a wine bottle bag, fabric collage, and some felt that had been sitting in my fabric bin forever. I even had the perfect container to hold my soon-to-be heart treasures. The best part of this project was that I had just received fabric and scraps from some art friends. We trade our leftover fabrics, fibers, ribbons, and scraps. I was very excited when I opened the boxes and saw the groovy new colors and patterns that I did not already have. A confession: I am not very good at the sewing part. I don’t have a high-tech sewing machine and I am just barely competent with a needle and thread. I need to have a book in front of me to do any fancy stitches by hand. But the best thing about this project is that it turns out great even with the simplest stitches and embellishments. | 1.
