ovos Rail's The Pride
of Africa offers
an old-world
elegance and
luxury never equaled
in the 1920s. Many
seasoned IRT Society
travelers consider it
their favorite train. Celebrated not only for its teak
equipment, the train is rightfully proud of its stellar dining,
amazing South African wine list
and friendly on-board service.
And considering it runs over
sometimes rickety track through
the wilds of South Africa,
Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia,
Tanzania and Namibia, it's a
miracle-worker, too. Add to that
a comfy rear-end, open-air deck,
genuinely posh accommodations
and an all-inclusive price. What's
not to love?
slEEpiNg cArs
Three types of accommodation, among the most spacious in
the industry, accommodate 72
guests. All cabins offer a writing
surface, a personal safe and
complimentary mini-bar. All
have en-suite bathrooms and airconditioning. Original fittings
combine with the modern
technology of hot showers, hair
dryers and shaver plugs. All have
a plethora of windows, many
that open-a vital feature, in our
opinion, for experiencing the
African countryside. Windows
can be securely locked.
Pullman Suites are the most
"spartan." Book early if you want
one. There are just 15 Pullman
compartments, and they sell
out a year in advance. They are
76 feet square, ideal for single
travelers. A comfortable, daytime
sofa-seat converts to double or
twin beds (one up, one down)
for evening. Deluxe cabins are
quite large (108 square feet), with
just three per carriage; there
are 22 on board. Deluxe suites
feature either two twins or king-

size bed and a small
lounge area. At 172
square feet, Royal
Suites take up half
a train car; most
departures have four
Royal Suites. Special
features include ensuite bathroom with
Victorian bathtub (you can
soak and watch the world go
by) and shower and a separate,
private lounge with minibar.
Live it up and have dinner served
privately in your Royal Suite.

DiNiNg & louNgE cArs
The two restaurant cars
feature delicious meals. All food
and drinks, from cocktails to
excellent South African wines,
are included. Fresh local
ingredients and traditional dishes
such as game are highlights.
Every morning, a made-to-order
breakfast and cereal/fruit buffet
are offered. Lunch and dinner
are multi-course affairs on lovely
china, silver and linen.
Of the two lounge cars, our
favorite is on the back end: it
has a bar, sitting area and large
open-air "patio" in the rear for
wind-in-the-face viewing. IRT
travelers enjoy this immensely.
Smoking is allowed only in a
separate, semi-enclosed lounge.
IRT tip: Our single travelers
say Pullman class is fine for one
person. But we advise couples to
choose deluxe or royal suites.
