ne of the most delightful
and jolly rail experiences
we've ever had was aboard
Belmond Royal Scotsman.
We love it for so many reasons.
Its small venue has just 40 passengers. This makes you feel so
at home, and so pampered. The
fabulous food and the wine selection. And its collection of Scotch
(and other spirits) in the bar is
awe-inspiring. The outings range
from the sublime to the challenging. Most of the train's cars are
of 1960s vintage, but they have
been recast into an Edwardian
confection of varnished woods,
polished brass and fine fabrics.
IRT guests love the open-air back
deck and that the tour cost covers
almost everything.
slEEpiNg cArs & louNgE
The five sleeping carriages
provide 16 double and four
single cabins, beautifully designed with rich inlaid wood. The
twin compartments are 85 square
feet with two lower single beds
positioned in an "L" shape; two
cabins have double beds, large
enough for only the most slim of
couples. Four compartments are
for single travelers-great news,
because they do not require a
single supplement, a rarity on
luxury trains. These are 66 square
feet and contain one twin bed.
All cabins have large en-suite
bathrooms with sink, toilet and
shower. They also feature dressing table, full-length wardrobe,
individually controlled heating,
ceiling fans, opening windows
and cabin service call button.
The train stops at quiet sidings at
night. Please let us know if you
are very tall: one double room
has an extra-long bed.
The train's newest addition
is the "Bamford Haybarn Spa
Car." It offers two relaxing single
treatment rooms. (Call us ASAP

your experience, buy spa products from the train boutique.
Bamford toiletries, in fact, are
restocked daily in every compartment's shower.
The new spa car also has two
sleeping compartments-one
with two twin beds and the other
with a double bed.
DiNiNg cArs
Dining is elegant. Meals are
multi-course, candlelit affairs, made with the finest local
produce, seafood and meat, with
finely paired wines. The traditional dining car offers tables for
four or two; the second dining
car is set for 20 people at three
large tables. Presentation is gor-

geous; service is friendly.
At the end of the train is its
the observation car. Originally
built in 1960 by the Metropolitan-Cammell Carriage and
Wagon Company, the car began
service in 1961 as a first-class
kitchen car. In 1989, the car was
bought from its private owner
and converted it to its current
configuration, able to comfortably hold all 40 guests in the
lounge area. At the back is our
favorite spot: the open-air observation platform, for wind-inthe-face viewing of the striking
Scottish scenery.
