Itineraries Minnesota - Summer 2008 - (Page 13) The Cathedral of Our Merciful Saviour 4:30 – 5:30 pm St Peter is home to the unique E. St Julien Cox House. It was the home of one of the earliest settlers. Eugene Cox was an attorney, St. Peter’s first Mayor, and a representative to the State House and Senate. It’s the only Gothic Italianate structure in MN and its style resonates of the great cathedrals, castles and palaces on a smaller scale. You’ll chat with costumed guides as your group tours the house. 5:30 – 6:30 pm As you travel the Hwy (Hwy 99 to be exact) keep your eyes on the horizon for Le Center…it has a few spires of its own as you go by. 6:30 – 9:00 pm Arrive in Faribault and check into the AmericInn Hotel and relax a bit before dinner. Take a stroll down main street Faribault, rich in history, with quaint shops, and a variety of restaurants to choose from. The entire 200 block is on the National Register. Proud building owners have been restoring and renovating buildings to keep pace with the modern needs, while honoring the architecture of the 1880's. grottoes stand to tell your group the story of Redemption through Christ. Father Paul Dobberstein as a young seminarian became ill with pneumonia and promised to build a shrine to the Virgin Mary if she helped him out. He started his payback in 1912 and continued building the greatest of American grottos until he passed on in 1954. This is a huge landmark to ones religious devotion. Standing four stories tall and nearly a football field in length, it took nearly 50 down the road. 1 – 2:30 pm BLUE EARTH Rolling back down I-35 and west on I-90 is Blue Earth, MN, home of the Jolly Green Giant standing tall and proud at the Green Giant Park. 2:30 – 3:30 pm Minnesota’s first stained glass window is beautifully displayed at the historic Episcopal Church. Built in 1872 this church has remained unaltered since its construction, and includes Swiss-made stained glass windows and the original pews of wooden peg construction. 3:30 – 5:00 pm Head south on US-169 to West Bend, Iowa home of the Grotto of the Redemption. Iowa’s, eighth wonder of the world. 5 – 8:00 pm Check into your hotel and enjoy the evening with a catered buffet dinner at the restaurant of the Grotto of the Redemption.
