DAY ONE 2:30 – 5:00 pm See an award-winning musical that premiered on Broadway in 1987, “Into The Woods”, presented by the Northern Light Opera Company. An entertaining blend of some of the world’s most beloved fairy tales set to the magnificent music of Stephen Sondheim. Other dates available for this performance are July 25, 26, 31 & August 1-2, held at 7:00 pm. 5:00 – 5:15 pm Head west on Hwy 34 to Smokey Hills Wilderness Resort for your evening dinner & lodging. 5:15 – 6:00 pm Freshen up and relax before dinner. 6 – 7:00 pm Minnesota’s Original Chuckwagon Supper Show includes tender slices of Dutch oven roast beef or delicious BBQ chicken. Other items include cowboy beans, foil-wrapped potatoes, fresh hot biscuits, cool sliced peaches, Cookie’s homemade spice cake, hot Arbuckles’s cowboy coffee and delicious lemonade. 7 – 8:00 pm After your supper, sit back and relax as The Smokey Hills Wranglers entertain you with vintage cowboy, bluegrass and Gospel songs. (Reservations are required 218-573-2999). Dinner show with the Smokey Hills Wranglers is on Saturday evenings or by appointment for another night. 8 – 9:30 pm A horse & wagon ride through Smokey Hills Forest (25 minute trip for each group). Smokey Hills lodge accommodations each have a custom theme and are equipped with all the amenities, all cabins have hardwood floors, showers, and complementary wireless internet. You’ll find it at coordinates Little Falls G-12, Long Prairie F-12 & Browerville F-11 on the 2008 Annual Group Travel Map distributed in the Fall 2007 issue of Itineraries Minnesota Magazine. 9 – 10:30 am Your group is welcomed by the Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls, who founded the St. Francis Convent & Campus in 1891. They constructed a building that immediately served as a residence for orphan children, a hospital, a home for the aged and a convent for the sisters. Tour the campus and see the Sacred Heart Chapel (built in 1942) and Hurrie Hall, both historic landmarks. The Romanesque influence in the chapel, can be seen in its pillars, rounded arches and the symbolism of the stained glass windows. 10:30 – 11:30 am See the church that has been in Little Falls for 141 years, The Episcopal Church of our Saviour. Some of its many beautiful features include a hand-carved statue of Christ; the pews, choir area and altar, which are finished in weathered oak, and of course the windows - these four modern windows are eye catching and beautiful. 11:30 – 12:00 pm Board your motorcoach and head west on MN-27 to Long Prairie. 12 – 1:00 pm Eat a pleasant lunch in the Long Prairie Golf Club House and learn the exciting history of Long Prairie (1848), one of the oldest existing communities in the History of the State of Minnesota. 1 – 1:30 pm Your eyes are drawn up to the tall steeple of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. You’re drawn inside by its St. Mary’s Catholic Church stained glass windows, all of the same design except in its sacristy. 1:30 – 2:30 pm Visit the Christie House, which according to the State Historical Society is unique and valuable because it has remained unchanged over the years. Home of two generations of doctors and it has been owned and preserved as a museum by the City of Long Prairie since 1976. It is fully furnished with period furniture, stained glass windows and plenty of old fashioned charm! 2:30 – 2:45 pm Make the short journey to Browerville’s main street to see one of the most beautiful Catholic churches to be found anywhere! 2:45 – 4:00 pm German and Polish immigrants of the area built Christ the King Catholic Church, earlier known as St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985, with its unique ‘onion’ towers. Be sure to see the grotto here as well.
