Skylines & Shorelines Vatican Splendors and Religious Art & Architecture in Minneapolis-Saint Paul Bronze Hand - John Paul II Painting Sistine Chapel Ancient Basilica This sample itinerary is best Fall 2008. You’ll find it at coordinates I-8 & L-9 on the 2008 Annual Group Travel Map distributed in the Fall 2007 issue of Itineraries Minnesota Magazine. 10 – 12:00 pm Experience 2,000 years of Vatican art and history when The Vatican Splendors comes to the Minnesota History Center beginning September 27, 2008. With Michelangelo items and works by Bernini, Giotto, and others, your group will see artwork dating back to the third century. From the venerated relics (bone fragments) of Saint Peter to items from the election of Pope Benedict XVI, this exhibit comprises one of the largest Vatican collections ever to tour North America. Many items have never before been on public view. From culture to history to art, explore how the Papacy has impacted-and been impacted-by the world throughout the centuries. 12 – 1:00 pm Grab a bite to eat at Café Minnesota within the Minnesota History Center. 1 – 3:00 pm Discover the collections of religious art with a free trained tour guide at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Your group will learn about the artists and artwork that depict Christian, Islam and Judaism art through the ages. 3 – 5:00 pm Complete your group tour with a visit to of one of the Minneapolis – Saint Paul area churches. Guides will tell you about the architecture and art within these historic buildings. Choose from below or see all three: Cathedral of Saint Paul The cathedral dominates the Saint Paul skyline and sits atop the highest point in downtown Saint Paul. The building is an example of classical Renaissance architecture and was designed by E.M. Masqueray at the turn of the century. Basilica of Saint Mary Recognized as one of the finest examples of Beaux Arts architecture in the country, the Basilica of Saint Mary was constructed between 1907 and 1915. It’s also the first Basilica in the United States, honored by Pope Pius XI in 1926. It is also named on the National Register of Historic Places. Our Lady of Lourdes The oldest continuously used church in the city of Minneapolis. It was designated a U.S. historic landmark in 1934 and is the first parish in the United States named in honor of Our Lady of Lourdes. Located near the original cobblestone Main Street of Minneapolis and St. Anthony Falls.
