Ahead to our own time, Tamara Thweatt, Anne Reynolds, and Jodi Sowers team for the premiere of a new work for baroque flute and two modern flutes by UIndy’s John Berners. UIndy faculty commemorate this towering giant of the 18th century with arias, cantatas, and trio sonatas, complementing his unique contributions with those of his contemporaries. Peaceful Valley Chamber Players: Muriel Mickelsons and Glen Kwok, violins; Nancy Agres; viola; Anne McCafferty, cello; Michael Borschel, clarinet Faculty and guests present an intriguing program of varied chamber works, from the classic 1926 Trio for oboe, bassoon, and piano by Francis Poulenc to music of the past two decades by Russian, Australian, and Argentinian composers: Edison Denisov’s engaging Sonata for alto saxophone and cello from 1994; James Ledger’s “Swamp Music” for horn, percussion, multi-effects digital processor and MIDI-controlled sampler; and Osvaldo Golijov’s elegiac “Tenebrae” for soprano, clarinet, and string quartet. Commemorating the 200th anniversary of Joseph Haydn’s death, the program opens with his lively B-flat Piano Trio (H.XV:20) with guest Davis Brooks. You also will hear our distinguished wind faculty in Paul Hindemith’s Kleine Kammermusik from 1923, our voice faculty in selections from Brahms’ Gypsy Songs, and a quartet of percussionists led by Paul Berns in Osvaldo Lacerda’s “Brazilian Miniatures.” UIndy guitarist Thomas Tudek performs music of Manuel Ponce: his Theme, Variations, and Finale. The Hollywood Connection: Music of 20/21 Monday, March 23, 7:30 p.m. New Century String Quartet: Dean Franke and Louise Alexander, violins; Susan Chan, viola; Dennis McCafferty, cello; with Mitzi Westra, mezzo-soprano; Beverly Scott, viola; Perry Scott, cello Avoiding persecution during World War II, composers such as Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Igor Stravinsky experienced mixed results in the Hollywood film industry, but their chamber works for strings are extraordinary. The NCSQ explores Korngold’s Sextet, Op. 10, and Stravinsky’s Three Pieces. Guest Mitzi Westra joins the Quartet for “A Sinking Love” by the 21st-century Hollywood composer Tan Dun. paGe eleven Fo cus o n F l u te Monday, February 9, 7:30 p.m. Anne Reynolds, flute; Anne McCafferty, cello; Claude Cymerman, piano Faculty flutist Anne Reynolds welcomes guests Anne McCafferty and Claude Cymerman for music of Nikolai Kapustin (his jazz-inspired Trio for flute, cello, and piano) and Philippe Gaubert (“On a Clear Morning”). Ms. Reynolds adds her voice to the 100th-birthday celebration season of distinguished American composer Elliott Carter, performing his 1991 tour-de-force for solo flute, “Scrivo in Vento,” inspired by poetry of Petrarch.
