University of Indianapolis - 2008-2009 Calendar of Arts & Cultural Events - (Page 13) Jazz Artist Series Now in its second season, the Jazz Artist Series features a Wednesday night concert once a month. The first half of the year features talented local jazz artists in the informal setting of Room 115 of the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center. Concerts in the second half of the year take on a more formal tone, featuring top names from the New York City jazz scene performing in the Ruth Lilly Performance Hall. I ca ru s Wednesday, September 17, 7:30 p.m. Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center, Room 115 Admission: Free The Icarus Ensemble was formed in early 2006 and is made up of three members of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra—assistant concertmaster Dean Franke, bassist Peter Hansen, and assistant principal bassoon Mark Ortwein—along with a pair of Butler faculty members, percussionist Jon Crabiel and pianist Gary Walters, who regularly perform as guests with the ISO. Franke and Hansen also serve as adjunct music faculty at UIndy. The group performs music by its members as well as arrangements of traditional jazz, world, and classical music. S t e v e A l l e e Tr i o Wednesday, November 12, 7:30 p.m. Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center, Room 115 Admission: Free Pianist Steve Allee teams with his trio on originals and jazz standards. Allee’s résumé boasts a variety of accomplishments, including music composer for movies New York in the Fifties and Something to Cheer About, music writing contributions for TV shows including “Friends” and “NYPD Blue,” and a commission from the Indianapolis Museum of Art to write a piece for its 100th anniversary. His trio released its first CD (Allee’s fifth) Colors, which featured mainly original compositions, in 2007. Rob Dixon Wednesday, August 27, 7:30 p.m. Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center, Room 115 Admission: Free Tenor saxophonist Rob Dixon came to Indiana to continue his education in Indiana University’s Jazz Studies program, where he worked with renowned jazz educator David Baker. Dixon then honed his skills in Indianapolis before moving to New York, where he worked with jazz greats like the Count Basie Orchestra and Slide Hampton. Following his stint in New York, Dixon returned to Indianapolis in 2002 where, in addition to his quartet, he leads a funk jazz group, Trilogy + 1. S o p h i e Fa u g h t Wednesday, October 15, 7:30 p.m. Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center, Room 115 Admission: Free Indianapolis native Sophie Faught, a young prodigy on the tenor saxophone, has performed with Nicholas Payton at New York’s Lincoln Center and at jazz festivals in Indianapolis, Ravinia, Vail, Portland, and the Netherlands. An Indiana University alumna, Faught was named an Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation Scholar in 2004.
