The Iowa native has recorded and toured with groups, big bands, and vocalists including Terell Stafford, the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, Ella Fitzgerald, Luther Vandross, and James Taylor. A SteepleChase recording artist, Oatts is a faculty member at the Manhattan School of Music and is artist-inresidence at Amsterdam Conservatory. A multi-instrumentalist from New York City, Scott Robinson is proficient not only on modernday jazz staples like the saxophone but also on countless members of the wind, reed, and brass families, including the contrabass sax, C-melody sax, echo cornet, double bell euphonium, and ophicleide. Known as a player in the swing tradition, Robinson received the Louis Armstrong Award from the National Association of Jazz Educators and was named the U.S. State Department Jazz Ambassador in 2001. J az z We e k UIndy’s second annual Jazz Week features prominent combos and big bands of local, regional, and national renown. In addition to concerts, the week features the UIndy Jazz Festival, an annual event in which area high school jazz bands have a chance to perform for and get tips from local pros. All concerts are held in the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center’s Ruth Lilly Performance Hall. Tim Hagans Wednesday, April 8, 7:30 p.m. Admission: $20 general; $10 seniors; free for kids 18 and under and college students with ID New York trumpeter Tim Hagans is a Blue Note recording artist who has performed around the world. He received Grammy nominations for his albums Animation/ Imagination and Re: Animation. A Dayton, Ohio, native, Hagans was a featured soloist on the soundtrack The Score and has performed with a number of ensembles, including the Blue Wisp Big Band. Antonio Hart Wednesday, March 25, 7:30 p.m. Admission: $20 general; $10 seniors; free for kids 18 and under and college students with ID Alto saxophonist Antonio Hart, a Baltimore native, has a number of recordings to his credit, including eight as a leader and more than 80 as a guest. He received a Grammy nomination for his album Here I Stand and frequently travels with the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band and the Dave Holland Big Band, in addition to his own group. He is currently a faculty member at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College and the Jamey Aebersold summer camp. arts.uindy.edu UIndy Jazz Ensemble fea t u ri n g R i c h P e rry Tuesday, February 24, 7:30 p.m. Admission: Free Tenor saxophonist Rich Perry joins UIndy’s own big band for an exciting evening of jazz. The UIndy Jazz Ensemble, led by Harry Miedema, is composed of students who audition for membership in the ensemble prior to the fall semester. In addition to performing in concert throughout the year, the Jazz Ensemble serves as a laboratory experience for the Jazz Pedagogy course.
