One of the most respected players of his generation, he has performed with such names as Chet Baker and the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra. Perry has been a SteepleChase recording artist since 1993 and is also a sought-after instructor of jazz improvisation, frequently leading clinics and workshops across the country. Blue Wisp Big Band Friday, February 27, 7:30 p.m. Admission: $20 general; $10 seniors; free for kids 18 and under and college students with ID Formed nearly 30 years ago by drum legend and Indianapolis native John Von Ohlen, the Cincinnati-based Blue Wisp Big Band performs a variety of hard bop-oriented jazz. The group has recorded a handful of albums through the years, including Tribute in 2007. The Wednesday night staple at the famed Blue Wisp Jazz Club in Cincinnati, the 16-piece band still includes nearly all of its original members. U n i t e d Tro m b o n e S u m m i t Saturday, February 28, 7:30 p.m. Admission: $20 general; $10 seniors; free for kids 18 and under and college students with ID Three world-class trombonists, Slide Hampton, Steve Turre, and Fred Wesley, team up for this exciting event. Hampton, who grew up in Indianapolis, has a storied career that spans decades and includes performances with fellow greats like Dizzy Gillespie, Thad Jones, and Mel Lewis. In 2005, the Grammy award winner was honored with the Jazz Master Award from the National Endowment for the Arts. Internationally renowned trombonist and seashellist Steve Turre has been a member of the Saturday Night Live Band since 1984 and is on the faculty at the Manhattan School of Music. The California native has toured with Ray Charles and is a frequent winner of both readers’ and critics’ polls in JazzTimes, DownBeat, and Jazziz for best trombonist and best miscellaneous instrumentalist (seashells). WIC R Jazz Festival Saturday, April 18, 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Smith Mall (rain location: Schwitzer Student Center dining hall) This third annual outdoor festival celebrates Jazz Appreciation Month and features local jazz artists performing on the hour. Admission is free to the event, which is hosted by UIndy’s radio station, WICR 88.7 FM, Indianapolis’s only jazz radio station. Steve Allee Big Band Thursday, February 26, 7:30 p.m. Admission: $20 general; $10 seniors; free for kids 18 and under and college students with ID Among pianist and composer Steve Allee’s many accomplishments is a Grammy nomination for the big band album Downtown Blues, which included famed drummer John Von Ohlen. As music director for the Bob and Tom Show, the Indianapolis native has coproduced 55 albums, including Rodney Carrington’s Greatest Hits, which went gold. U I ndy Jazz Festival Saturday, February 28, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Admission: Free Top public school jazz bands perform and learn from local pros during this annual festival.
