The most comprehensive recital series in the area continues to feature compelling presentations of solo repertoire, dynamic readings of the great chamber literature, exhilarating period instrument performances, provocative premieres of new works, and distinctive approaches to both classic and contemporary jazz. Concerts designated “Words with Music” provide informative remarks, insights, and contexts for featured works. Faculty Artist Series concerts are presented in the Ruth Lilly Performance Hall of the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center. All are free to the public. For more information call (317) 788-3255. Following the success of last year’s milestone birthday celebration and an acclaimed season of concerts around the world, Maestro Raymond Leppard returns to the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center to lead the Festival Orchestra in music of J. S. Bach, Gioachino Rossini, Edvard Grieg, and Benjamin Britten. The concert opens with excerpts from Grieg’s popular “Holberg” Suite, followed by J. S. Bach’s secular Cantata No. 209, “Non sa che sia dolore,” featuring soloists Kathleen Hacker and Anne Reynolds. After intermission, clarinetist David Bellman revels in the virtuoso fireworks of Rossini’s Introduction, Theme, and Variations. Maestro Leppard pays tribute to his countryman and colleague Benjamin Britten with two movements from his Simple Symphony. Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, Leppard has conducted more than 170 recordings, earning five Grammy awards, a Grand Prix Mondial du Disque, a Deutsche Schallplattenpreis, and an Edison Prize. Recent travels have taken him to the orchestras of Warsaw, Budapest, Granada, the Scottish National Opera, Stuttgart Opera, Chicago Opera Theatre, the Manhattan and Juilliard schools, and the Colorado Symphony. with clarinet; Carl Reinecke’s Trio in A minor, Op. 188, with oboe; and Eric Ewazen’s Ballade, Pastorale, and Dance with flute. P. E. Bach, Chopin (Mazurkas and Nocturnes), Debussy, Messiaen (celebrating the composer’s centennial), William Albright, Joseph Schwantner, and UIndy composer John Berners. Ratliff’s Monday night efforts have earned high praise over the years for “sterling musicianship” and “conviction in every phrase” (Indianapolis Star).
