AUGIWorld Magazine - March/April 2008 - (Page 6) Autodesk’s newest releases of several major products arrived right on schedule. Moving forward with BIM solutions, introducing enhanced geospatial products, and improving on proven products such as Inventor and others are among the announcements from Autodesk. Take a look. In mid-February, Autodesk held the World Press Days event in San Francisco at which it unveiled the new releases of many of its products. The products themselves won’t be available until late March, but by then you’ll have had time to get a good look at them, courtesy of the beta testers. And speaking of sneak peeks, AUGIWorld writer Lee Ambrosius previews AutoCAD® 2009 in this issue. A decidedly different user interface will be among the first things users will notice. Lee steps you through all the changes in his feature article, “Re-envisioning Design with AutoCAD 2009.” Also in this issue is Donnie Gladfelter’s preview of AutoCAD® Civil 3D® 2009. As Donnie explains in his article, “A First Look at AutoCAD Civil 3D 2009,” what this version may lack in dramatic, revolutionary new features it makes up for with a solid collection of smaller, but important, enhancements. 6 Despite what Webster says, for those in AEC and related industries, the word (or acronym) of the year is BIM or Building Information Modeling. BIM enables architects, engineers, contractors, and owners to create coordinated, digital design information and documentation, then use that information to accuracy predict performance, appearance, and cost, according to Autodesk. Autodesk’s new releases of BIM solutions, such as Revit® Architecture, Revit® Structure, and Revit® MEP, among others, are designed to help users understand and improve the performance and operation of their designs before they are built, thereby saving money, delivering products faster, and keeping watch on the environmental impact of those designs. According to Autodesk, the new releases further improve project collaboration and integration between the building design, civil engineering, and construction disciplines.
