AUGIWorld Magazine November/December 2007 - (Page 32) Structure on all new projects to produce schematic design, design development, and construction documents. The electrical (lighting, power, fire alarm, and systems) and mechanical (HVAC) disciplines are pushing the envelope to incorporate Revit MEP to produce construction documents for the 130,000 square foot pilot project and future projects. Harley Ellis Devereaux has been leading the way into the BIM environment for the past decade by progressing from 3D drafting to a Building Information Model environment driving SD, DD, and CD delivery. The company has continually shown its commitment to provide superior quality, constant innovation, and unequaled service to its clients by utilizing the latest CAD/BIM software. The pilot project at Harley Ellis Devereaux is a 130,000 square foot Ambulatory Care Center with a cool $45 million price tag. The project is a threestory brick and steel frame building consisting of diagnostic exam rooms, atrium, cafeteria, and a bridge connecting to the main hospital. Complex spaces such as MRI, CT scans, and PET require 3D documentation. Harley Ellis Devereaux has a multidiscipline team of 15 people using Revit Series software for the architecture, structural, mechanical, and electrical design. Revit MEP 2008’s true shining feature is coordination and interference checking, which above all things, is the most important part. project in which staff tested the limitations of Revit. Quickly, team members realized they needed to develop a set of BIM standards and a well-defined project template. Working with their reseller, they also devised a training program suited to their company’s needs, based from this prototype. The firm has two solid pilot projects that staff members are working on, beginning with schematic design through construction documents. The first project is a 35,000 square foot renovation of a local community college consisting mainly of meeting rooms and classrooms. the Revit model from AutoCAD. Some benefits of the 3D/BIM environment are reduced drafting time by utilizing the automatic routing tools to connect branch ductwork, and the utilization of interference checking to provide coordination for above ceiling systems. The pilot project at Harley Ellis Devereaux is turning out to be very successful; the company’s expectations are high for future improvements as Revit allows even more engineering and coordination to be performed in the model. 3D MEP Section – Courtesy of Clark Nexsen Clark Nexsen – Norfolk, Virginia Clark Nexson is a well-respected multidiscipline, 350-person Architectural/Engineering firm headquartered in Norfolk, with various other offices located elsewhere in Virginia and in North Carolina. Clark Nexson is currently testing out Revit’s strengths and weaknesses in designing in one combined A/MEP/S model. MEP Systems - Courtesy of Harley Ellis Devereaux As with any new software, a significant amount of content has been developed upfront and massaged to create a worthwhile 3D environment. Company processes have been incorporated in the model to aid in standard approaches to utilizing the tools available in Revit. The models are linked together to provide constant coordination between the architects and the engineers. Room-by-room coordination with A/M/E of elevations were done “on the fly” in the electrical model to confirm design completion. The coordination of the electrical devices was complete at the close of the room-by-room coordination. Details, diagrams, and schedules are imported into 32 The designers on the project are excited to learn more about Revit’s phasing capabilities and enabling the use of worksets. They also will be taking advantage of linking in the site/civil work from AutoCAD® Civil 3D. The second project that Clark Nexson is benchmarking is a single-story patient housing facility. The project team is hoping to use the benefits of Revit for unit-based design. The team is looking forward to using the grouping features that are new to the Revit Series. Once their engineers and designers worked with Revit MEP through a few projects, they began to see the benefits of working in a BIM environment. As a firm, they are committed to providing their clients with the highest level of service when using the Revit Series.
