New Head Coaches and compliance organizations can be in other sectors, whether it be government or business. We need to be aware of that and we need to continue to be fiscally responsible in the cost of our program and the revenue needed to support it while understanding there will likely be capital needs to maintain adequate facilities to recruit and compete. Where does the University of Evansville fit into Division I athletics? Division I athletics continue to ride a wave of record popularity. In fact, the NCAA has declared a moratorium on schools wanting to go to Division I. There are over 30 Division I conferences nationally, and the MVC is recognized as one of the top conferences in the country, so there is a lot of publicity for the conference and its schools. When I go to various meetings throughout the year, people have asked me if we can compete as a small school in Division I. It is pretty clear to me that we can. We have won championships in many of our primary sports over the past decade. We produced individual champions in our other sports as well. So, yes, we may be small, but we have proven that we can compete and win championships in our league and reach post-season play. Someone walks up and says to you, “John, I either want to be a bank president some day or a college athletics director.” Which direction would you lead them? I would tell them to try to do both. I worked at Old National for years and have great friendships there that still exist. I cannot remember ever waking up and thinking, “I don’t want to go to work.” It was a thoroughly rewarding career and hopefully I made a difference in that organization over the years. I have always loved being around athletics, and this I viewed as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity where the timing for me was excellent. I was able to take retirement after my 35 years in banking and make a career change to something that I have a passion about doing. My first year has not been disappointing to me. I have enjoyed getting to know so many people, and being around a college atmosphere has been all that I hoped it would be. I feel very, very fortunate that I have had two careers that I have thoroughly enjoyed. I Misty Murphy Head Women’s Basketball Coach I I I Comes to UE from Rice University, where she was the associate head coach Previously head coach at Colorado StatePueblo and Sheridan College in Wyoming Played at Sheridan College and Colorado State Misty and her husband, Mike, have a daughter, Gabrielle, and a son, Brayden I Wes Carroll ’03 Head Baseball Coach I I I I Elevated to UE head coach on July 2, 2008 I Became UE’s first freshman All-America selection in 1998, and still holds the school record for doubles (74) A 37th round draft pick of the Philadelphia Phillies in 2001, Carroll played five years of minor league baseball Brother of current Cleveland Indians infielder Jamey Carroll ’96 Married to former UE women’s soccer player Ashley Sandefur ’03; they have a son, Brooks I competed in the meet which featured various UE cross country alumni. “Getting to line up on the starting line with my dad in my first collegiate race was really cool,” said Brian. “Here I was, not only getting to start my first collegiate meet, but I was able to do so right next to my dad. It was kind of like he was passing the torch on to me.” “I ran with him for about the first 80 meters or so and was going full out,” recalled David. “I knew that I wasn’t going to keep up and I shut it down shortly thereafter, but to be able to run with him in that race was the kind of magical moment in life that does not come around too often.” w w w. e v a n s v i l l e . e d u Brian raced in UE’s top five for much of his freshman season. He ranked second on the team at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional meet in the 10K despite being sick prior to the meet. Along the way, Brian talked to his dad about races and about David’s 8K record, which he is confident he can break before he graduates in 2011. “It would be unbelievable to break my dad’s record,” said Brian, “although it would still partially be his record, because he has played such a major role in my running career. But, I would probably remind him every once in a while who actually holds the record.” I Christine Bader Head Women’s Tennis Coach I I Comes to UE after a four-year playing career at Michigan State University A two-time All-Big Ten performer, a threetime Academic All-Big Ten selection, twotime recipient of a Big-Ten Sportsmanship award At 22, she is the youngest head coach in UE’s Division I history I 11 http://www.gopurpleaces.com http://www.evansville.edu
