University of Evansville Magazine - Fall 2008 - (Page 12) JOE ATKINSON CAMPAIGN CONNECTIONS CONNECTIONS how important that was in your life, and how much you gained from it, and you want to do something to give back.” Both Rademachers always were the type to be involved. During their time on campus, both were involved in Musical Madness, building homecoming floats, and playing in intramural sports. Jeani even served as athletic director for the girls in the residence hall. Today Jeani is on the UE Alumni Association Board of Directors, and as a LEAGUE member she speaks to prospective students in the Cincinnati area. Her husband sits on the UE Board of Trustees, is a former member of the business and engineering board, and was the keynote speaker at the University’s 2003 commencement. Together, they are U•ENVISION 2010 Cincinnati Campaign Committee cochairs. “We’re involved in making calls, trying to be host and hostess for events we hold up here,” Randy said. “We were blessed in terms of being able to attend UE, and we think it’s important that people try their very best to return something. As students, you don’t think about the fact that what seems like a big tuition check isn’t building any buildings or providing endowments that provide scholarships – that check is just paying the daily bills. “The way those buildings get built or the scholarships become available isn’t students – it’s former students and friends of the school who decided to give back.” For two people who found their happiness at UE, that was an easy decision. Randy ’79 and Jeani ’79 Rademacher For Randy and Jeani Rademacher, a lifetime of marital bliss began with a losing cause. The future couple, sophomores at the University of Evansville, lived in Hughes Residence Hall. Both were active students; they were involved in intramural athletics, homecoming, and other activities around campus, which led them both to run for Dorm Council, against one another. “I guess we had bumped into each other a couple of times before that,” Randy said, “but we really started to get to know each other when we ran against each other for Dorm Council. There was one other person in the race, and Jeani and I both lost. In our misery, we got to know each other. “We always say that we lost the race, but we won in life.” Over the next few months, the two spent a lot of time with a group of mutual friends. At the end of the night, the last two people sitting up, talking, were usually the future Mr. and Mrs. Rademacher. Shortly after their graduation, they moved to Cincinnati and were married, and they have never forgotten the role UE played in their ensuing happiness. “We had a period of time when we weren’t involved [with UE],” Jeani said. “You get busy with your own life, and that happens. But as you get older, you realize 12 Steve ’70, H ’06 and Shelly Harkness Steve Harkness believes in education. “Education is a great equalizer in society,” he said. “At a time when society seems to be divided into the ‘haves’ and the ‘have nots,’ and the middle people are being squeezed, education will be one of the big equalizers.” That is why Steve and his wife, Shelly, have devoted their lives to education. Steve sits on the University’s Board of Trustees, the Cincinnati Campaign Committee of the U•ENVISION 2010 campaign, and has three endowed scholarships at the University. Shelly, a professor at the University of Cincinnati, has become an avid supporter of UE through her husband’s involvement. Both feel they have achieved tremendous success in life – and they credit their education with getting them there. At one point, Steve was not even sure he would be able to attend UE, or any other college. UE MAGAZINE/FALL 2008
