JOE ATKINSON CAMPUS CONNECTIONS Mastering Career Advancement Karen Lance thought her career in Evansville had reached its peak. During her undergraduate years at Ball State University, she had not even considered going into business. She wanted to be a teacher. After two years in the field, though, she changed her mind. So she took a job as an admission counselor at the University of Evansville. Then, she took a job with A.G. Edwards, where she received the certifications she needed to be an investment consultant before moving to Old National Bank. After several years at Old National, she had moved into upper management in the investment arena. “At that point, to further my career, I thought I would have to move to New York or Chicago,” Lance said. “I was getting close to the top of what you could do CONNECTIONS This December, Lance will be one of 12 students to graduate with UE’s inaugural executive Master of Business Administration cohort. After taking courses every other weekend for two years (Fridays from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:45 p.m.), Lance and her 11 student colleagues will finish classes in November and walk in this year’s winter commencement. Founded in 2006 with the generous support of the Lilly Endowment, UE’s EMBA Program was designed for men and women in the business community to pursue a strong postgraduate business degree while working full-time during the week. It was designed as a cohort, allowing all students to go through as a group, and the curriculum was created to mix a global perspective with local applications, thus giving students the tools they need to succeed in today’s complex business environment. in Evansville. I Harlaxton – Year 43 Harlaxton College, one of the oldest American study abroad programs in continuous existence, welcomed 200 students and visiting faculty to begin its 43rd year of “College in a Castle.” Ceremonies included a stirring opening convocation with flags, bagpipes, drums, robes, mace, processional, and the singing of The Star Spangled Banner and God Save the Queen. Operated as a college for six years in the 1960s, Harlaxton Manor was home to Stanford University in Britain. It has been the province of the University of Evansville since 1971. I I I Harlaxton Manor is one of Britain’s 100 best houses, according to a volume of the thousand best published by Simon Jenkins of the London Times. Harlaxton College is listed among the top 25 overseas study programs in The Student’s Guide to the Best Study Abroad Programs. Those who know Harlaxton well consider it the absolute best. Harlaxton has, for 25 years, hosted the Harlaxton Symposium in Medieval Studies, a premier scholarly conference drawing delegates from Britain, America, and Europe. An independent publisher produces a volume of the symposium papers each year. The then-undefeated and soon-to-be world famous Harlaxton Lions basketball team (all volunteer, comprising both students and faculty members, guys and gals) challenged the NCAA Champion Florida Gators to a playoff for the TransAtlantic Roundball Championship of UE MAGAZINE/FALL 2008 2
