Tori Carter, junior archaeology major, at Angel Mounds State Historic Site in Evansville This fall, as faculty members and students wander past Neu Chapel, they may notice a whole lot of digging going on. It happens every year, and every year it brings a few stares, as students from the University of Evansville’s Department of Archaeology and Art History excavate the remains of an old World War II army barracks. “The area was a unit for soldiers who were married with children,” said Alan Kaiser, the UE assistant professor of archaeology who teaches the excavation course. “Every time we work there, we find all kinds of interesting things – jewelry, pedals from the children’s tricycles, and all kinds of things.” The dig is one of countless opportunities that UE archaeology students have to get real-world experience in their chosen field. In any given summer, archaeology students from UE can be found on digs in every corner of the world. This year, they worked on the Tell Megiddo expedition in Israel, an Iron Age fort excavation in the United Kingdom, and even an Angel Mounds excavation right here in Evansville. Tori Carter, a UE junior who worked with Indiana University’s Glen Black Laboratory on the Angel Mounds project, noted that the UE program encourages students to get out and work on projects early and often, so that what they learn in the classroom can come to life in the real world. UE MAGAZINE/FALL 2008 Iraqi Student Project Zaid Abdulmajeed had just passed his first year at Baghdad University when his family was forced to flee Iraq. That was more than two years ago. Since then, Zaid, 21, and his family have lived in Damascus, Syria, as refugees. He was forced to put his education on hold, working at a mini-market in Damascus to help support his family. This fall, though, Zaid finally was able to get his life back on track. On August 13, he arrived at the Evansville Regional Airport and made his way to the University of Evansville, where he is enrolled as a freshman civil engineering major. His arrival was part of the Iraqi Student Project, a pilot program that involves about a dozen universities nationwide. Each university has taken in an Iraqi student like Zaid – students who have been forced to flee their homeland, abandon their education, and live as refugees. For his part, Zaid said he was excited about the opportunity offered by the University of Evansville, and he wants to use his education to help people in his homeland. 4 “I lost two years in Syria without education when I left my college, my house, my friends, and my country,” Zaid wrote in his personal essay for the Iraqi Student Project. “Yet I still have the hope to continue my study, trying to do something useful for all humanity in peace, not in wars … I want to take part in building the biggest and the most important buildings in the world. “I hope, in my life, to have the ability to help poor people to have their houses and give them the opportunity to be active in developing the society and making it better.” I Zaid is one of more than 200 international students enrolled at the University this year. They come from more than 50 countries.
