University of Evansville Magazine - Fall 2008 - (Page 5) Girls Have Options … in America and Britain It is one thing to read about the accomplishments of Sir Isaac Newton. It is another to see the room in which he formed many of his theories, or see his childhood drawings in his parents’ home, or even stand before the tree believed to have borne Newton’s famous apple! A group of 14 high school-age girls did all of those things – and more – during a week at Harlaxton College, UE’s British campus in Grantham, England. The girls were part of UE’s first weeklong Options for High School Girls at Harlaxton. The session near the end of July was, quite possibly, the first experience of its kind to be offered high school girls. Options for High School Girls was begun in 1992 as a tool to educate young women about the many career opportunities available in the fields of engineering and computer science. Two years ago, the staff put together a plan to make the experience two-fold: one session to be the traditional program offered on the stateside campus of the University of Evansville, with a second session offered at Harlaxton College. “The advantage of travel abroad regarding engineering and computer science is that there is more history to see and therefore more understanding of the progression of modern life,” said Tina Newman, the program’s coordinator. “Many of the students found it interest- ing to see differences in life, based on current accommodations. For instance, most wash basins in England still use separate spigots for hot and cold water. To wash hands with warm water, one must plug the basin and collect the water. Engineering design has played a part in the common spigot used in most of our homes.” Along with their visit to Newton’s childhood home, students were able to visit the Papplewick Pumping Station, Bletchley Park (where they saw a history and progression of computing), and the Colosus, which was a semi-programmable computer used to break German code during World War II. According to Jocelyn Barchet of Kingston Springs, Tennessee, “This trip to Harlaxton College and London was a truly amazing experience. Not only did we stay in an incredibly magnificent manor, but we also learned so much about the field of engineering!” Economic factors will play a part in determining the future of the Options for High School Girls Harlaxton program; however, according to Phil Gerhart, dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science and director of the Options programs, this pilot program has been a great success. I “If you’re on a dig, and you find something you’ve learned about in class, it’s amazing,” Carter said. “You can learn about stone tools in class, but when you dig one out of the ground, it blows your mind completely, because you’re actually living it. “What you learned in the classroom takes on a whole new meaning. It really makes you feel like the classroom experience is so much more worthwhile.” Meanwhile, the students are working w w w. e v a n s v i l l e . e d u toward a degree they cannot get at many other universities. In most universities, archaeology is a specialization available in conjunction with degrees in anthropology or biblical studies. At the University of Evansville, it is a degree program unto itself. That degree, coupled with the amount of experience students receive, gives graduates a boost to the next level in their burgeoning careers. “To me, it’s important to say that I’m an archaeologist,” Carter said. “To be able to say I have an archaeology degree, as opposed to an anthropology degree, is very important to me. The classes are geared toward archaeology, which means we are studying exactly what I need to do the work I want to do in my career. “Then, the studies required in other fields build onto our archaeology degree. That puts us in a tremendous position when we graduate.” I 5 http://www.evansville.edu
