After Clinton took office, Heather joined her in Washington, D.C., as a special assistant and policy advisor. In 2006, she left the senate office to work on Clinton’s re-election campaign. After Clinton’s re-election, she left politics to go into private law practice. In Her Own Words: “I was her assistant, so I literally sat outside her office and talked to her seven days a week. I was a fly on the wall for some incredibly historic matters, not the least of which was September 11, 2001. Because Senator Clinton represented New York, we were especially affected by that in terms of responsibility and the work that needed to be done in the aftermath of that tragedy.” In Her Own Words: “His [Huckabee] national campaign manager, Chip Saltsman, and I had served together for Governor Sundquist. I have family in Iowa, so they approached me to ask if I would be interested in doing logistical work for the campaign. I thought it sounded interesting and thought it would last about six weeks. Of course, it turned out to be four months. I’m glad I did it, because working with Governor Huckabee and his family was a privilege and a rewarding opportunity.” pieces of legislation. In what I did, a lot of the job is making sure that legislation doesn’t get done, because there is a lot of bad legislation proposed. There is satisfaction in keeping bad things from getting into law, but I also worked on areas of tax law that, while they weren’t as high-profile, they gave me the opportunity to champion a lot of provisions that helped people who didn’t necessarily have a voice in Congress – provisions that didn’t have a lot of special interest money and lobbyists behind them.” # # # Name: Liz Kelly (right) # UE Connection: Class of 2001 ## Political Connection: After earning a degree # # Name: Anita Horn Rizek UE Connection: Class of 1989 # # # Member, Board of Trustees # Name: Jennifer Hatten (with Mike Huckabee) UE Connection: Class of 1993 Political Connection: After graduating from UE with degrees in political science and journalism, Jennifer moved home to Nashville, where she took a job with thencongressman and gubernatorial candidate Don Sundquist. Her work on that oneyear commission led to a job as tax counsel for the Senate Committee on Finance, where she worked as an advisor to Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-N.Y.). After Moynihan’s retirement, she worked until 2001 as a legislative liaison for senate majority leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.). In Her Own Words: “I loved it, and it was in political science and international studies at UE, Liz moved to Washington, D.C., eventually landing a job with the congressional campaign of Virginia’s Melissa Martin. While working for Martin, she took a part-time job at the Republican national headquarters – a job she eventually parlayed into a full-time job in fund raising. Liz worked her way up until she was working with major donors. In 2007 she moved into work on major Republican congressional fund raising for the National Republican Congressional Committee. In Her Own Words: “In my current position, I work with major donors. The nice thing is, I get to know the members of Congress and their staff and to have daily contact with them. All of the different personalities I get to meet are always a lot of fun. I’ve met the President, and Lynne Cheney (wife of Vice President Dick Cheney), and Mrs. Bush. It’s incredibly exciting to have the chance to meet and have access to all of these decision-makers.” hard to walk away from it, because you are responsible for such incredibly important # # ## # UE MAGAZINE/FALL # # ## # # # # ## # # # # # # # # # ## # # #### # # ### ### 2008
