River currents range from easily navigated Class II – which are suitable for beginners – to thunderous Class IV whitewater – recommended for experienced rafters only. And you don’t have to bring a thing to get in on the action. Local outfitters can set you up with rafts, instruction and experienced guides for an excursion that is appropriate for every generation of your party. spinning your wheels So many mountain biking opportunities exist in the Asheville area that cycling enthusiasts actually move here to take advantage of them. Such was the case with Eric Krause. “I had come here specifically to race and, after the races, I spent time exploring and found so many trails. I had to keep coming back,” Krause says. “Of all the cycling locations across the country, I chose to move to Asheville. The city’s progressive culture sealed the deal.” Visit Krause’s new cycling shop, BioWheels, to rent a bike, pick up some maps and get some advice on where to hit the trails. “We usually send people who are just starting to explore the area to Bent Creek,” Krause says. “It’s an easy drive from town and has 40 miles of trails that aren’t too difficult. The Davidson River area by Brevard is where the big epic rides are with big elevation changes.” In 2007, BioWheels completely renovated an art deco building in Asheville’s business district that includes 35 green features. tee time Where can you find awe-inspiring views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, lush emerald fairways and Tiger Woods? That’s right – only in Asheville, where the plethora of beautiful, mountaintop courses make the area a golfer’s paradise. As for Tiger Woods, the mega-champion has chosen to design and build his first golf course in the United States here in the area.
