Aegis BMD builds upon the Aegis Weapon System and the Standard Missile family of weapons. Aegis BMD provides Long Range Surveillance and Tracking of ballistic missiles, and can share this data to cue other missile defense sensors and weapon systems. The Aegis BMD Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) provides engagement capability against short and medium range ballistic missiles. Presently, three Aegis Cruisers and fourteen of ﬁfteen Long Range Surveillance and Track Destroyer installations have been completed. Of these, the three Aegis Cruisers and seven Aegis Long Range Surveillance and Track Destroyers will be upgraded to the Block 2004 engagement capability by the end of 2007.
