KANSAS CITY Rosedale Barbeque In the city that elevated barbecue into a finger-licking art form, Rosedale’s is considered a masterpiece. Since 1934, this humble eatery in the warehouse district has served smoked beef, pork and ham sandwiches with signature southwestern sauce. Rosedale’s sauce, prepared every day from scratch, is thinner and hotter than most of the local recipes. For the past 15 years, the bank’s treasure has been a menu of elegant, Italian-style entrees paired with selections from Teller’s extensive wine list. Under the soaring ceilings and globe lamps in the old bank lobby, the waitstaff presents dishes such as penne tossed with brown butter, asparagus, sauteed salmon and lemon-scented cream sauce. Teller’s noon menu includes sandwiches and several of the evening mainstays. GORHAM SEE Kansas town along I-70 (15 miles east of Hays). In fact, the town of 300 owns and operates the cafe. Home-cooked German fare stars on Friday buffets in the storefront eatery, housed in a former grocery store. The old-country cuisine includes favorites such as cheese pockets, bierocks (hamburger and cabbage baked in dough pockets), fried noodles and cabbage rolls. Many diners, who patiently wait in line during the lunch rush, order sandwiches with three sides, choosing from items such as slaw, potato salad, fries, jalapeño poppers and the smokehouse’s much-loved baked beans flavored with bits of meat.
