Here’s a sampling of spots for corn mazes, hayrides, cider sipping and fun. For more stops, turn to page 72. Louisburg Cider Mill, Louisburg—Eighty acres of THE TO orchards and cropland frame the old red barn where apples are pressed for the mill’s fresh cider (about 20 miles south of Overland Park). At the annual Ciderfest and Craft Fair (in late September), families feast on Autumn fun at the Louisburg Cider Mill. barbecue, visit the petting zoo and pick out pumpkins. Rees Fruit Farm, Topeka—The Rees clan began selling apples out of its barn in 1901. More importantly, in the early 1960s the family bought the second slush machine ever made and invented the apple cider slush. You’re welcome to sip one as you select from among 30 varieties of apples, as well as apple cider, apple cider doughnuts and apple crisp, plus salsa, mustard and other unique products in their farm market. In October, the Rees family hosts harvest days with hayrides, orchard tours, fresh pumpkins and family activities. Gaeddert Farms, Buhler—You could spend the entire autumn finding your way out of the elaborate, 4-acre corn maze here (about 60 miles northwest of Wichita). Many guests even challenge the intricate passageways at night. Tired feet get a rest during hayrides to the 10-acre pumpkin patch, where visitors select likely jack-o’-lanterns. THINGS DAZE Game BASEBALL PLAYED WITH PASSION (and family-friendly stadiums!) are hallmarks of Kansas amateur games. The annual 15-day National Baseball Congress World Series in Wichita’s Lawrence-Dumont Stadium is the place to catch great amateur games (www.nbcbaseball.com). Die-hard fans won’t want to miss the tournament’s second weekend for Baseball ‘Round the Clock—17 games are played in 56 hours. For more games, visit CommunityAmerica Ballpark (just north of the Kansas Speedway track), home to the Northern League’s Kansas City T-Bones. 14 PHOTOGRAPHS, FROM TOP: MICHAEL C. SNELL, HARLAND J.
