Hedrick’s Country Inn & Exotic Animal Farm, Hutchinson — Guests at this bed and breakfast get up- Stays SEE close and personal with animals such as giraffes and zebras. Camel rides also are part of the fun. The inn is built to look like a row of buildings along a frontier Main Street. Midland Hotel, Wilson — Hollywood filmed Paper Moon in this elegant limestone hotel built in 1889 for rail travelers (50 miles west of Salina). After a $3 million renovation, Mission-style furnishings adorn the 28 guest rooms. Try the restaurant’s specialty, chicken-fried steak. The Red Rock Guest Ranch in Soldier. The Beaumont Hotel, Beaumont —Visitors at this smalltown getaway sometimes land their planes on the hotel’s grass airstrip and taxi to the front door. Built in 1879 as a stop for stagecoaches and cattle barons, the restored hotel (45 miles east of Wichita) houses car-driving boarders, too. For a blast from the past, eat in the ‘50s-style diner. Red Rock Guest Ranch, Soldier — At this working cattle ranch (55 miles northwest of Topeka), you’ll bunk comfortably in rooms of the original 1897 house, or in a new guest cottage. During the day, guests help with chores, hike and try their luck at the fish ponds.
