Here’s a sampling of fun, history and food just minutes off the roads. For stops in Kansas City and its suburbs, plus Lawrence, Topeka and Wichita, turn to “Your Kind of Town,” beginning on page 41. Interstate-70 Celebrating Agriculture Bonner Springs, Exit 224 Vintage farm equipment and oldtime buildings star at the National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame. In the fall, the Kansas City Renaissance Festival comes to town for seven weekends. ‘Bleeding Kansas’ Redeemed Lecompton, Exit 197 At imposing Constitution Hall State Historic Site, exhibits and, at times, costumed reenactors take visitors back to the eve of the Civil War, when pro- and anti-slavery violence battled in this area, dubbed “Bleeding Kansas.” In 1857, proslavery delegates met here to draft a constitution that would have admitted Kansas to the union as a slave state. ‘Antiques Capital’ Paxico, Exit 333 With seven dealers selling vintage furniture, glassware, old stoves and more, little Paxico bills itself as the “Antiques Capital” of Kansas. Shops occupy a onetime general store, bank and other restored, 19th-century buildings. West of town, stop at Wyldewood Cellars Winery, home of award-winning elderberry wines.
