Kansas Visitor's Guide 2007/2008 - (Page 7) Quirky Kansas AS YOU TRAVEL KANSAS, save some film — or pixels — for a memorable assortment of roadside oddities. Here’s a sampling: Cawker City—See the world’s largest ball of sisal twine, weighing in at approximately 9 tons with a circumference of 40 feet. Coffeyville —A replica of the nearly 2-pound, rugby-ball-size hailstone that landed in town September 3, 1970, is on display at the Dalton Defenders Museum. Lucas —At the Garden of Eden, Civil War veteran S.P. Dinsmoor used 113 tons of concrete and many tons of limestone to build his log-cabin-style home and nearly 150 sculptures, many depicting biblical scenes. Kanopolis — The unique sandstone formations with bulbous caps on slender stems at Mushroom Rock State Park once served as landmarks for frontier travelers. Greensburg—Steam locomotives relied on water from the 109-foot-deep, 32-foot-wide World’s Largest HandDug Well, which was laboriously dug in 1887 and 1888. (Above) Nearly 150 sculptures decorate the grounds at the Garden of Eden in Lucas. (Below) See the natural wonder of the sandstone formations at Mushroom Rock State Park.
