Working Together
as a Team
I am a bit of a control freak, albeit less of
one than I was 10 years ago. I can forgo
choosing the restaurant or movie and let the
group decide - unless the venue serves foie
gras or the movie is in 3D - but I still delete
almost all Facebook photos my friends post
of me, and I have to make my bed every
morning or it will nag at me all day.
When it comes to designing my own
space, I am kind of in between. I know
which colors and textures I like, but I am not
sure I trust my own judgment when it comes to mixing it up a bit. When
I choose what I am going to wear every day, I go for options that are
safe and always find myself admiring someone else who took it up a
notch and mixed pink and red fabrics or gold jewelry with silver.
It would be the same scenario in my own bathroom or kitchen
renovation. I know what I like and what I don't like, but I need a
professional to help me decide how to put it all together without the
look being boring or too neutral.
I keep hearing from a variety of sources that today's consumers
are very savvy when it comes to designing their spaces and that
they want to have greater control over these projects. That scenario
doesn't necessarily guarantee a successful outcome, and I believe
that unless a consumer has some design experience, it's best left up
to a professional.
But there is a way for both to work together, and that's the underlying
theme of this issue as reflected in several of the columns.
In "Last Word," designer Christopher Grubb says just that: Listen to
your customers and let them be a part of the process. In the "Universal
Design" column, the point the author makes is that everyone wants
to have a beautiful design that they can have some say in - even if
function is the main goal. The article is also chock-full of accessibility
opportunities you've probably never even thought of.
In "Dealer Dish," three designers give their tips on how showrooms
can attract more business, one of whom says, "Sell consumers what
they are seeking: greater control over their projects and budgets and
a latent desire to be design professionals themselves." As far as the
showrooms' designer clients, there are plenty of tips in there on how to
make their shopping experience easier and more successful as well.

reading this letter at the show! On pages 69 to 84, you will find ample
