Mixing Old with New
Period kitchens are updated with modern
amenities, additional space and extra daylight
Upper cabinets were removed
in this kitchen, which was
previously designed to emulate
a Scandinavian boat, and
replaced with undercounter
options, and new windows were
added to brighten up the room.

basement was reworked
with a six-burner range in place
of a non-working fireplace,
decorative stainless steel and
additional counter space.
In past centuries, the kitchen - full of smoke, heat and mess - was an uncomfortable and unsafe workplace best kept separated from the home's
living and entertaining areas. Today's kitchen couldn't be more different;
in fact, it is often the home's primary gathering area. But if you're living in
an older house, turning your kitchen into a modern and appealing space
can pose many challenges. Over the years, this has been a consistent
and welcome challenge for my team at Charlie Allen Renovations, and
we've found a variety of solutions.

We also moved appliances and cabinetry to provide a better workflow and easier access to adjoining rooms and an outside deck. The
home has lots of historic appeal, which we maintained by using carefully
selected materials, including the cork floor, rustic cabinetry and a custom
farm-style table, which takes the place of the more expected island and
better fits the overall look of the room.
Farmhouse Style
A Little Extra Space Makes a Big Change
The mudroom and bathroom occupied prime space at the back of
this Queen Anne Victorian, leaving the kitchen without much access to
daylight. By relocating those rooms to the other side of the house, we were
able to expand the kitchen and introduce a line of windows above the

entered through the back door, which unfortunately opened directly into
their small kitchen where coats, shoes, mail and other pieces of their busy
