The Queen Anne Victorian
appeal was maintained in this
kitchen through the use of cork
floor, a custom farm-style table
instead of a traditional island and
rustic cabinetry from Metropolitan
Cabinets & Countertops.
Extra space was created in
this 19th-century kitchen by
removing a wall and building
a bump-out entry with
additional storage.
We achieved this by opening up the wall surrounding the stairway. Because we couldn't alter the footprint of the kitchen in any way, maximizing
the functionality of the space was essential. We took out a non-working
fireplace and replaced it with a six-burner range and additional storage
and counter space, greatly improving the functionality of the room. New
antique-styled cabinetry and the existing exposed-beam ceiling provide
great character. We also re-pointed the original stone foundation. Decorative stainless steel, designed to resemble pressed tin, contributes to the
one-of-a-kind aesthetic of this unique period kitchen.
Scandinavian Boat Kitchen
only passage from the dining room to the den was through the kitchen,
which made things feel particularly crowded during gatherings.This kitchen needed some breathing space.
Our solution involved taking down the wall between the kitchen and
the den, which created a more expansive feeling. We also added badly
needed square footage by building a small bump-out entry with custom
storage for coats and boots. This allowed for a wider corridor into the den
and plenty of space for family members and guests.
Cellar Kitchen
The kitchen in this 1850s house is located in the home's basement.
The homeowners loved its unusual and unique qualities but desperately
needed to introduce modern amenities and wanted to better connect
the room to the living areas above.

In an unexpected design choice by previous homeowners, the kitchen
in this 1870s house had been remodeled to resemble the galley of a Scandinavian boat. The new owners felt that this choice produced a rather
cramped and dark workspace and asked for a fix.
While we maintained the original footprint of the room, two items on
the renovation checklist made a big difference. First was removing upper cabinets, which provided clean sightlines to the adjacent breakfast
nook and made the space feel bigger. Taking the cabinets down in
turn allowed us to add new windows overlooking the backyard, which
brightens the room considerably. New undercounter cabinets provide
storage, with items placed exactly where the homeowners need them.
Finally, we moved workstations and appliances to create a smooth and
comfortable working environment. n
