A Fair Fight
Designer shares her own physical limitations
to identify with clients' challenges
After her parents said they wouldn't buy
her a Barbie Dreamhouse when she was a
little girl, Ebony Stephenson built her own,
which was essentially when she discovered
her love for design and architecture. She
went on to attend a special art school for
the gifted in middle school; attended high
school and a vocational school for drafting
and design; and studied urban planning,
kitchen and bath design and landscape
architecture at Virginia Tech.

fibromyalgia in 2003, is now the head of design and selections at Criner Remodeling in Newport News, Va. The news
of her illness was one of the main reasons she chose to specialize in
aging-in-place and universal design.
This universal design/aging-in-place shower features a frameless
glass shower enclosure, an angled grab bar, a rain hat, lever handle,
recessed lighting, a tiled recessed niche and a built-in shower seat.

"When I am designing for clients, I can show them the effort I have
to go through to, say, reach a certain cabinet, and they can identify because of their own situations," she said. "I have always wanted to help
people, and aging-in-place and universal design can still be pretty but
also help with someone's everyday struggles."

This project features a lower cast-iron tub for a shorter client, a grab
bar/soap tray combo to assist with sitting/standing, lever handles so
it is easier to turn water on and off and base-height cabinets so the
client does not have to slump over to reach items.

Stephenson began her career with Criner Remodeling in 2012 and
is involved in every aspect of her projects from start to finish, including
the beginning phases of the sales process, ordering the clients' selections and then working with the rest of the project team and the clients
throughout production.
