decorative mirrors for good facial lighting and a chandelier that provides
the general lighting in the master bath.
"I use three phases of light," he added. "General for cleaning and
seeing, task for specific areas and ambient lighting that can be dimmed
to set a scene."
Carnemark and his team sourced environmentally friendly products,
including composite countertops, low-flush toilets and a heated floor in
the bathroom that eliminates the need to heat the whole house first thing
in the morning. Universal design elements were also incorporated for the
future and include wider doorways, comfort-height toilets, accessible
drawers, handshowers and bench seating.
And as with any project, budget can also be an issue.
"No matter whom I have worked for, they dream a little bigger than
their actual budget," he added. "We try to help our clients understand
what they will really enjoy and what choices make sense for a valuepacked project."
The lesson he and his clients learned during this bathroom project
was not to assume things have to stay in one place; there are always
options.
"Clients sometimes have a false sense that they know what is best
during a remodel," said Carnemark. "Hiring a pro helps them discover
there are other ways of doing things, which is definitely a benefit." n

According to Carnemark, the main challenge at the forefront of the
project was being able to fit the program into the existing space, which
was overcome when the clients allowed him to move the son's bedroom.
This allowed them to accommodate his and hers closets, as well as a
separate room under the stairs for a safe and an extra bathroom for
their guests.
"When a project is a success, it's not about how cool it looks but how
we were able to meet the program," added Carnemark.
