than the perimeter, though the wood tones complement the elements in
the adjacent rooms.
One obstacle out of their control was the appliance delivery timing,
which affected the rest of the project. When the appliances - originally
backordered - were finally delivered, every appliance coming off the
truck was damaged, forcing the homeowners to re-order the same appliances from different vendors.
"There was a lot of downtime for the workers and a lot of frustration for
the homeowners," said Devane.
Finding just the right color granite for the countertops proved to be a
challenge. Devane had her heart set on a robust, deep-brown granite,
but that particular color is on the rare side. To compensate, she found
Pietra Imperialle, a stained granite, while she used Talisman for the perimeter. Some sustainable design elements she incorporated include a
water-base finish on the floor and no-VOC paint for the walls.
A Lesson Learned
As the kitchen was coming together, Devane helped steer the clients
toward changing out other elements of the house to balance the new
kitchen design, something they were initially reluctant to do. Consequently, new window treatments and light fixtures were added to the dining
room, as well as a pass-through to the dining room; new dining room
wallpaper; and new iron balusters, banisters and crown molding in the
adjacent rooms.
"In the dining room, there is a wonderfully open window, so with the
transferring of light from the dining room window to the kitchen window,
it's a much brighter space now," she said.
Devane is pleased with the results and, as with every project, picked
up a bit of wisdom on the way.
"I learned not to be afraid to guide your clients away from an original concept that they created," she said. "When you make such a big
change, you make such a big impact on the rest of the home. I knew
they'd be disappointed if those other areas stayed the original way." ■
