Universal and Green:
Good for You and
the Environment
Two movements in the kitchen and bath
industry that highly interest me are sustainable
and universal (or aging-in-place) design. I
say "movements" because these two design
categories really shouldn't be seen as trendy
anymore, they should be mainstream - items
that are just a natural part of a kitchen and/
or bath project.
As far as me being environmentally
conscious, I am quite sure my family has
had everything to do with that. As a child
living in Nigeria with my mother for two years, I learned early how to
save on electricity and water, as both were scarce commodities, and
we found ourselves reading in the dark on many an evening and
going to the nearby river to bring back buckets of water.
To a less dramatic degree, my father has had an influence on
me by keeping the environment at the top of his list when it comes
to elections. As an avid gopher tortoise researcher and advocate of
keeping the species alive, he swears every time a new shopping center
goes up in his Duval County, claiming the construction is eliminating
many animals' habitats.
My dad and stepmom recycle everything possible - plastic bags,
(not water bottles because they no longer buy water in plastic bottles),
food containers and even the tiniest scraps of paper - everything goes
back to the environment. They installed skylights in their house that
bring in natural light, saving on electricity, and turn everything off when
they leave the house.
In our Green Design column in this issue, we feature an NKBA
Design Award-winning bathroom in which designer Elina KatsioulaBeall used so many sustainable design elements, we had to increase
the article layout from two to three pages. Green design is not only
important to her, it was also crucial to the homeowners who renovated
their master bath.
As far as universal design, even if the need for it isn't right around the
corner, it's a smart idea to incorporate some of those elements when
doing a kitchen or bathroom renovation - it's called planning ahead.
I have to admit I haven't done much planning in this category, but at
least my space is an open floorplan - with wide enough doorways and
walkways for a wheelchair and ample lighting and daylighting for the
sight challenged.
In our Universal Design column this month, Ebony Stephenson
shares the design techniques she uses with her aging-in-place and
handicapped clients. Diagnosed with fibromyalgia 10 years ago, the
designer has a special way of identifying with her clients' challenges.
Also read about her stint at KBIS 2014 when she tried on a special age
simulation suit in front of attendees.
