The master bathroom now features a large shower
with a drying area instead of the dated shower/tub
combo. Silverthorne limestone makes up the flooring,
shower surround and vanity backsplash.

"Everyone is getting rid of the big deck tubs in their masters and installing large showers they can have a party in," she added. "It's a bathroom
I would love to shower in!"
Jaffe used a full slab of black quartz for the drying space off of the wet
area - with little pebbles and divots in it to prohibit slippage. This quartz is
the same material used for the countertops. The drying area houses the
shower controls so the user doesn't have to get wet when turning those
on. The shower surround is made of limestone - the same material used
for the backsplash in the vanity area. The bathroom cabinets are walnut,
and all of the plumbing fixtures are a polished nickel - a warmer choice
than chrome.
Originally, her clients wanted to tear out the glass blocks, but Jaffe
explained that they are functional for letting light into the space. With the
new design, they are no longer an eyesore, and replacing them would
have been an unnecessary expense.

Challenges and Solutions
Aside from the termite infestation, Jaffe said another challenge during
the project was the pace of the tile installer, which ended up working out
during the kitchen renovation because as long as it took him to finish up
coincided with the time it took to finish installing the doors, windows and
new walls.
Another setback had to do with the original contractor, who was
chosen by the homeowners, although Jaffe said a growing trend is the
designer hand selecting the vendors, cabinetmakers and contractors.
"It took him forever to get back to us with a bid," said Jaffe, "so I expressed to them my gut feeling about the choice and ended up bringing
someone in with whom I had worked for years - we know what to expect
with one another." n

Walnut cabinetry with a natural finish was chosen for the master bath
with chrome hardware from Alno, Sonneman Piccolo wall sconces
and polished nickel plumbing fixtures from Brizo's Virage Series.
