Retro Renovation
Century-old kitchen gets a functional update but honors the original style
Most homeowners tend to follow popular trends when remodeling.
One Chicago couple chose a different route when remodeling the
kitchen in their top-floor condominium. Built nearly 100 years ago, the
solid brick building's century-old history inspired the couple to return the
kitchen to its original look, but they chose to outfit the room with modern
conveniences and a highly functional design that made the most of the
230-sq.-ft. space.
Enter Joyce Zuelke, a kitchen and bath designer with Insignia Kitchen
and Bath of Barrington, Ill. Zuelke was excited about working with the
homeowners to design this room since it was so different from typical
kitchen remodeling projects - retro-styled appliances, simple cabinetry
(that wasn't literally falling off the walls), a tin ceiling, etc. However, the
challenges she faced were many:
* She was uncertain what lurked behind the walls and above the ceiling.
* She was limited to the room's existing 11-ft. by 20-ft. space.
* Modern appliances would require upgrades to the electrical systems.
* The homeowners were very specific about how their new kitchen must
look. Retro-style appliances were high on the list, as was increasing
light and adding storage space wherever possible.
Digging In
Insignia's craftsmen began at the top by carefully removing the ceiling. They were delighted to find 18 inches of empty but usable space,
and this discovery provided a bright solution to the dark kitchen problem.
Four Solatubes - non-electrical tubes that go from the ceiling through the
roof - were installed, bringing plenty of natural light into the room. Next, a
tin ceiling was installed over new wood framing to take advantage of the
higher ceiling and top off the room with a period-correct appearance.
After the walls were removed, new upgraded electric, plumbing and ventilation were added along with insulation.
