EDITOR'S NOTE Coveting Convenience I recently took a cooking class with some friends to learn how to make gnocchi. Because I didn't follow the rule of forming the potato pasta in small, ladylike twists and instead worked mine into pretzel-like lumps, my gnocchi tasted uncooked and highly unprofessional. Even so, it was a fun experience. I remember everyone taking turns washing their hands and noticed the faucet was covered in potatoes clumped together with flour. A hands-free faucet would really have been useful in that scenario. Today's consumer is about convenience and ease of use - whether it is hands-free technology in the kitchen and bathroom (no more touching the toilet flusher at home) or appliances that can actually help your cooking improve by maintaining exact temperatures or letting you know when you are running out of a specific ingredient. See our Kitchen Trends piece on page 44 and Bathroom Tech Savvy on page 30 for more in-depth information on ever-changing technology options. Other trends discussed in this issue include bolder use of color, creative storage solutions and personalization of such items as cabinetry and appliances. Our Cover Feature on page 60 highlights a kitchen that is anything but typical. Instead of a wall of cabinets, the homeowners desired more open shelving and creative storage solutions, such as shelves on either side of the island. Open shelving - another trend noted in our Special Report - also plays a part in Before and After on page 18. Universal or aging-in-place design is becoming much more the norm with multigenerational families living under the same roof and people who need a flexible environment that can adapt to changes. In our Universal Design column on page 14, the goal of the project was to design a home that was not only accessible to the ailing husband but that also catered to other family members caring for him.
