Washing Out Time
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, American families
do an average of 400 loads of laundry per year or about eight loads per
week. If the average speed of a wash cycle runs around 45 to 85 minutes,
doing laundry can add up to seven to nine hours each week.
"Research shows that when it comes to laundry, one of the most timeconsuming and tedious tasks is pre-treatment and prewash of clothing,"
said Dean Brindle, director of laundry product management at Samsung
Electronics North America. "Consumers are frustrated with the amount of
time, mess and waste it creates."
To save time, manufacturers are combining the washing machine
with a pre-treatment area, often with a built-in sink or a built-in, smaller
machine below the main washer. By simply cutting out the pre-treatment
task, users have more time and experience less stress.
After slimming down time on pre-treatment, the next step in reducing
stress in the laundry room is by making washing and drying cycles faster.
More machines are coming out with a better speed-wash option - often
running anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes with comparable performance
to a longer cycle.
According to Angela Smith, senior brand manager of home appliances
at LG Electronics USA, the new front-load washers save time by combining
the spin and rinse cycles.Twin nozzles in the front of the washer spray a concentrated detergent solution directly onto the clothes, and then a nozzle
above the door sprays water particles through the clothes for a thorough
but quick wash.

Extra Savings
Time-efficient laundry appliances go surprisingly hand in hand with
saving energy and money.
"ENERGY STAR certification is now a 'must-have' when consumers are
investing in new models," said Smith."Dryers are a whole new ENERGY STAR
category this year, representing huge opportunities for energy savings."
According to a recent survey by Whirlpool, 95 percent of homeowners
are interested in energy-efficient home appliances. Front-load washers,
which are dominating the washing machine market, save water simply
because they tumble clothes through a shallow puddle rather than submerging them. The real energy-wasting culprit is the dryer.
"Typical vented dryers use up large amounts of energy in the form of
venting hot, moist air," said Ben Artis, senior category manager, connected
home, at Whirlpool Corporation.
Along with ventless dryers, companies like Whirlpool have options like
EcoBoost, which uses a slightly longer drying time at a lower temperature to
help save while a homeowner is away. The appliance can also automatically delay the start of a cycle during high-demand energy periods, helping
save money in areas that offer variable rates during off-peak hours.
"There are tons of bells and whistles to add to your space," said designer Claire Paquin of Clean Design. "But clients are looking for their
laundry rooms to have a light and easy-breezy feel. They want to make
this ordinary and unglamorous task more palatable by being in a space
that is well-designed, functional and beautiful." n

(4 ) For hard-to-maintain clothing like suits, coats and sweaters, LG Styler's
clothing care system refreshes without water or detergents. The odorremoval feature uses steam to help remove unpleasant odors, and the
Moving Hanger Action gently shakes steamed items to remove wrinkles.
(5 ) Offering 14 wash cycles, the Electrolux Front Load Washer can add
steam to the wash cycle for whiter whites and improved stain removal. The
Wave-Touch controls offer the most wash cycles and options, including My
Favorite Settings and a wash stain menu.
(6 ) Compared to energy-wasting, vented dryers, the Whirlpool HybridCare
Duet Dryer with Heat Pump Technology actually regenerates energy during
the drying cycle using a refrigeration system to dry and recycle the same
air. Because it's truly ventless, the dryer can also be placed anywhere in
the home.
