The walnut breakfast bar is a bit higher than standard to accommodate the family's height, according to Barber, and the proportions of the
different elements are intentionally large in scale as well for overall balance.
Mudroom in the Kitchen?
Because the kitchen door is the family's primary entrance into the
home, it is used often. With no defined mudroom by this entrance in the
previous layout, piles of coats, shoes and backpacks cluttered up the
space. Barber used square feet that housed a former pantry for this attractive mudroom area that integrates well with the rest of the kitchen.
"The beauty of this kitchen was important, but the family is also very
practical and needed a functional space," said Barber. "The idea of
having a mudroom space that was not right by that door would not
have gotten the same use - they needed something that worked for
their lifestyle."
Accenting this "landing zone" is charming bead board, which was
chosen because it is period appropriate for the house; it is more durable
than a solid, painted surface, and it adds some visual texture to the room.
The mudroom floor is porcelain tile, which Barber said was chosen for its
practicality but also because it matches the cabinetry perfectly. On one
side is a utility closet, and the other houses a tall oven cabinet to create
balance and symmetry.
"It has been a major enhancement for this family to have this beautiful and highly functional space located right by the back door," she said.
Storage Savvy
The mudroom space offers organization just
inside the kitchen's main entrance to the house.
To provide the specialty storage missing in the former kitchen, Barber
incorporated appliance garages with bi-fold doors to hold things like the
mixer and food processor that used to clutter up the space. The side pull
of the doors maximizes the garage interior and allows the wife to use the
appliances without having to take them all the way out or move them.
A large pullout cabinet is used to store spices, dry goods and oils.
Large drawers for pots and pans and divided drawers for utensils are located below the range top. Large drawers with pegged dividers provide
additional storage for everyday dishes.
Barber integrated a composting bin into the countertop for the environmentally conscious family. Because they grow a lot of their own herbs
and vegetables, they are able to use the composting for their garden.
Zoning Challenges
According to Barber, the space planning was especially challenging
since the large kitchen required multiple work zones that don't fit into the
classic work triangle.
"Making sure each work zone was self-sufficient was key to making this
layout most functional," she added.
